Theoretical framework of the tool
Description of the tool:
The Provocation Technique is a creative method designed to generate unconventional ideas by deliberately disrupting common thought patterns. The main principle of the technique is to make a “provocative statement” – a sentence that may at first seem illogical, unrealistic, or absurd. The team then tries to develop this provocation further and look for practical solutions or ideas that could result from it.
Principles of the tool:
- Creating provocative statements:
The statement should be so non-standard that it disrupts conventional thinking. - Subsequent exploration of the provocation:
After creating the statement, the team tries to find ways it could be realized or how it could lead to innovation. - Overcoming established notions:
The goal is to overcome established ways of thinking and bring completely new perspectives to the problem.
Objective of the tool
- Generate unconventional and creative ideas.
- Break away from standard problem-solving methods.
- Encourage the team to think outside the box.
- Discover original opportunities for marketing communication or product innovations.

Step by step: a guide on how to use the tool
Prepare:
- A whiteboard or flip chart for writing down statements and ideas.
- 3 to 8 team members ready to experiment with unconventional ideas.
- Markers for writing and color-coding statements and ideas.
- 45 to 60 minutes for the workshop.
Step 1: Defining the basic problem or opportunity
At the beginning, it is necessary to clearly define what you want to solve. The topic should be as specific as possible.
Example: How to create an unforgettable campaign for a new product launch?
Step 2: Creating provocative statements
Each team member creates provocative statements that may seem illogical or absurd at first glance. The statements should intentionally disrupt common thinking.
Examples of statements:
- “We will only advertise without any images.”
- “We won’t sell the product, we will rent it out.”
- “We will use only one color for the advertisement.”
- “We will let customers create their own campaign.”
Step 3: Discussion and exploration of provocations
Select the most interesting provocative statements and discuss how they could be realized or how they could inspire the creation of new ideas. During the discussion, the team should try to answer the questions:
- “How could this statement bring something new?”
- “What specific solutions could we derive from this provocation?”
- “What advantages and risks would the implementation of this idea bring?”
Step 4: Selecting the best ideas
After the discussion, the team selects several of the best ideas that have the potential to be feasible or can serve as a basis for further campaign development.
Step 5: Campaign design
After selecting the best idea, a draft is made of what the campaign could look like and where it will be placed, reflecting the chosen idea.
Tools and materials
- Whiteboard or flip chart.
- Markers for writing down provocative statements and ideas.
- Stopwatch or timer to keep track of time during statement creation and discussions.
- Computer or tablet (if you are working digitally) so that everyone can see the shared results.
Tips and tricks
- Encourage absurdity: Encourage team members to suggest even seemingly crazy or unrealistic statements – it is often these that lead to breakthrough ideas.
- Don’t judge ideas too early: In the first phase of generating provocative statements, avoid criticizing or evaluating ideas.
- Overlap statements: Notice if some provocative statements can be combined or interconnected into a single creative concept.
- Fun is important: The atmosphere during the workshop should be relaxed and fun – creativity thrives best in a positive environment.
- When selecting ideas, focus on originality: Choose ideas that are unique and can truly attract attention or stand out in the market.
Conclusion
The Provocation Technique is an excellent tool for creating unconventional and innovative solutions. Thanks to intentional provocation, the team can overcome stereotypes and create new ideas that would not have arisen with a conventional approach. This method is particularly suitable for creating marketing campaigns that aim to capture attention with their originality and distinctiveness.
Possible model situations on how to apply the tool in practice
Case study: Pepsi and the 15 – 21 generation
Campaign description
The Pepsi brand, like other brands in the segment, must appeal to all generations. The new generation of 15 to 21-year-olds doesn’t sit in front of TV screens, but they are often attracted to unconventional campaigns that are creative and often even outrageous. Through Pepsi, we can show an example of how to use the provocation technique in practice.
Step 1: Define the goal:
To increase awareness of Pepsi among the younger generation (15–25 years) and strengthen Pepsi’s image as a brand that is bold, innovative, and goes against the grain. How to create an unforgettable and unconventional marketing campaign that will strengthen Pepsi’s image as a “rebel” brand and attract the attention of young people?
Step 2: Generating provocative statements
Using the Provocation Technique, we can create several provocative statements that disrupt common ideas about what a marketing campaign should look like:
- “Let’s try selling Pepsi without labels.”
- The customer would buy Pepsi cans or bottles without a logo or design. The goal would be to make people realize that taste is more important than branding.
- “Let’s create a Pepsi that can’t be bought.”
- A limited edition of Pepsi that customers could only obtain by participating in special challenges on social media or during events. This would create an exclusive product that would appeal to the young generation.
- “Let’s ban the use of the word Pepsi in the entire campaign.”
- The campaign could use only symbols, colors, and references, with the word “Pepsi” never appearing explicitly. The goal would be to create a mysterious and provocative effect.
- “Let’s not shoot commercials, but films.”
- Instead of traditional commercials, Pepsi would finance short films or web series that would not contain direct advertising but would symbolically express the brand’s values.
- “Let’s try not to sell Pepsi drinks in the campaign, but experiences.”
- As part of the campaign, Pepsi would organize unconventional experiential events (concerts, festivals, adrenaline challenges), where the brand itself would be part of the experience.
Step 3: Discussion and selection of provocations:
The team then discusses the provocative statements. They select those that are feasible but still have elements of provocation and develop them into concrete concepts:
- Provocative statement: “Let’s try selling Pepsi without labels.”
Elaboration:- A campaign called “No labels, no prejudice” could be created to promote authenticity and diversity. Pepsi would be sold in transparent bottles or cans without a logo, with an emphasis on the content, not the packaging.
- The campaign could also include partnerships with influencers who would promote authenticity and self-acceptance.
- Provocative statement: “Let’s try not to sell Pepsi drinks in the campaign, but experiences.”
- Elaboration:
- Pepsi would organize a series of secret events for young people, which could only be attended by those who received special invitations through interactive challenges.
- The experiences would be diverse – from music festivals to adrenaline activities like skydiving or night-time urban adventures.
Step 4: Selection of one idea:
The most acceptable idea is selected and developed into a more detailed concept that gives a clear idea of the communication method for the chosen target group.
Task Assignment
Brand: FlixBus
Product/service: Increase awareness of FlixBus services among young people aged 15–21 and strengthen the brand’s image as an affordable, convenient, and ecological way of travel for students and young adventurers.
Campaign Goal: How to create an unconventional and memorable marketing campaign that will appeal to the young generation and encourage them to choose FlixBus for their travels?
Step 1: Defining the goal:
Increase awareness of FlixBus services among young people aged 15–21 and strengthen the brand’s image.
Step 2: Generating provocative statements
In your group, start generating provocative ideas. Your imagination can run wild, as the goal is to come up with ideas that are meant to be provocative.
- Idea
Let’s try selling tickets that don’t have a specific destination. The customer would only find out the destination upon arrival.
- Idea ____________________________________________________________
- Idea ____________________________________________________________
- Idea ____________________________________________________________
- Idea ____________________________________________________________
- Idea ____________________________________________________________
Step 3: Discussion and developing questions:
Select the most interesting statements and discuss together how they could be developed into concrete ideas. Think about what steps would be necessary to implement these ideas and what impact they could have on the target group.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Step 4: Selecting the best idea:
Each team will select the best idea that they believe has the greatest potential to attract young people and entice them to use FlixBus services. They will then develop this idea into a campaign proposal.
Outputs
Brief campaign presentation (10 minutes)
Each team will present their campaign, which will include:
- All the provocative ideas generated
- A summary of how you approached the shortlisting process
- A justification for why you chose your specific idea, and an attempt to develop it (how the campaign will run, what tools and channels you will use, the expected impact on the target group, how the campaign will influence young people, and what will motivate them to use FlixBus)
The task of using the Provocation Technique for the FlixBus campaign will allow students to develop creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork skills. This method will teach them how to generate innovative ideas and turn them into concrete action plans that can be the basis for real marketing campaigns.
